Professional mobility in Europe

Healthcare professionals have a right to free movement within the European Single Market. This is set out by Directive 2005/36/EC on the Recognition of Professional Qualifications as amended.

Many healthcare professionals who trained in Europe choose to spend some time working in another European country. European health services benefit from this exchange of personnel and knowledge.

In this environment, regulators must become more efficient at sharing information. Close collaboration will help regulators to be sure they are registering competent doctors. Our Portugal Agreement sets out a framework for this collaboration.
