European Regulators endorse HPCB Memorandum of Understanding
30 May 2008
Nine competent authorities in Europe have recently signed up to the HPCB ‘Memorandum of Understanding on Case-by-Case and Proactive Information Sharing’.
The Memorandum establishes guiding principles for the sharing of information between regulators in complex disciplinary cases and situations of registration fraud. In particular it sets out how supporting regulators can proactively exchange information following serious disciplinary cases in the form of ‘alerts’. This forms an important contribution to patient safety in Europe.
The MoU has so far been signed by the Cyprus Dental Council, An Bord Altranais (Irish Nursing Board) and the Norwegian Registration Authority for Health Personnel, as well as in the UK by the General Chiropractic Council, the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, the General Osteopathic Council, the Health Professions Council, the Nursing and Midwifery Council, and the General Medical Council.
Representatives of competent authorities from across Europe are due to participate in the MOU implementation meeting being held in Oslo on 30th May 2008.
