Portugal Agreement
The Portugal Agreement is a collaborative voluntary work programme for professional healthcare regulators from within Europe.
The Agreement sets out a range of actions that provide a framework for voluntary cooperation and the development of professional healthcare regulation in Europe throughout 2008 and 2009. It builds upon the implementation of the Edinburgh Agreement.
Consensus between regulators on the spirit of the Portugal Agreement was achieved at the 2007 Autumn Meeting of the Healthcare Professionals Crossing Borders partnership, held in Lisbon, Portugal.
Over 60 delegates from 20 European countries welcomed the new work programme as a basis from which to build further European cooperation and collaboration in Europe.
The Agreement is informal and regulators are free to implement the actions it contains, where appropriate to the national setting.
The focus of the Portugal Agreement is information provision and exchange in the context of professional mobility and patient mobility within the European Single Market, to maintain patient safety.
