Commission publishes Green Paper on Directive 2005/36/EC

On 22 June the European Commission published its Green Paper on review of Directive 2005/36/EC. This opens a second round consultation on the Directive which will inform the adoption of a revised proposal expected in December 2011. The closing date for responses to the Green Paper is 20 September. To view the consultation, please click here.

The areas covered by the Green Paper include the role of the professional card, language requirements, fitness to practise information sharing amongst EU countries and the duration of basic medical training.

Internal Market Commissioner Michel Barnier said: “Updating the professional qualifications Directive is one of the priorities of the Single Market Act and will help make the European economy more competitive while encouraging growth and job creation.”

Alongside the European Parliament, the Commission published the Evaluation Report and the Summary of Responses to the consultation on the Directive held at the beginning of the year.

The European Commission will host a public conference on the modernisation of the professional qualifications Directive on 7 November 2011 in Brussels.
